Empowering Lives Through Palliative Care: An Awareness Session at Amar Seva Sangam

Home / Empowering Lives Through Palliative Care: An Awareness Session at Amar Seva Sangam

As part of our week-long initiative to raise awareness about palliative care in Tenkasi and nearby regions, we held an enlightening and highly interactive session at Amar Seva Sangam on October 13th, 2023. Our mission, much like that of Amar Seva Sangam, is to empower individuals facing health-related adversities. This article details the pivotal moments and key takeaways from this special event.

The Vision and Mission of Amar Seva Sangam

Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA), located in Ayikudy Village in Tirunelveli District, aims to create a “Valley for the Disabled.” ASSA’s vision resonates with the ideals of equality and active societal participation for differently-abled individuals. Their mission centers on rehabilitation, development, and fostering self-help initiatives for the disabled in rural areas. The organization was founded by Mr. Ramakrishnan and has become a premier institution focusing on disability management in rural communities.

SEEDS Palliative Care: Uniting Forces for a Noble Cause

SEEDS Palliative Care, a key initiative by the Percy Jebamalar Legacy Foundation, was honored to collaborate with ASSA for this awareness session. By joining hands with ASSA, we aim to amplify our outreach and bring palliative care knowledge to the doorstep of every home in Tenkasi and the surrounding regions.

Heartfelt Stories and Professional Insights

The event saw a unique blend of emotional storytelling and professional insights into palliative care. Mr. Abilash Praveen, who lost his spouse to cancer last year, likened himself to patients in wheelchairs, stating that while they were physically disabled, he felt life-disabled following his loss.

Dr. Radha Venkatesan delivered an inspiring talk, emphasizing the importance and functionality of palliative care for patients and caregivers alike.

An Engaging Audience

The session was attended by a diverse group comprising patients, caregivers, and medical professionals. The audience was deeply engaged, asking questions and seeking guidance on home care practices for patients.

The Way Forward: Home Care Training and More

SEEDS Palliative Care plans to collaborate with Amar Seva Sangam in the coming weeks to offer specialized training for home care. These sessions aim to empower caregivers with the knowledge and skills to look after their loved ones effectively.

Conclusion

The event was a powerful reminder of the critical need for palliative care education and resources, especially in Tenkasi’s rural communities. By leveraging the strength of collaboration and community engagement, we hope to make palliative care accessible and effective for all.
